The 2-2-3 Custody Schedule, Explained
How the 2-2-3 custody schedule works, who it fits best, and how to lay it out on a real calendar.
The 2-2-3 schedule is one of the most common 50/50 custody arrangements, and one of the most confusing to explain out loud. It's much easier to see than to describe, which is why most families end up sketching it on a calendar before it clicks.
How it works
Over a two week cycle:
- Week one: Parent A has Monday and Tuesday, Parent B has Wednesday and Thursday, Parent A has Friday through Sunday.
- Week two: Parent A keeps the kids Monday and Tuesday (carrying over from the weekend), Parent B has Wednesday and Thursday, Parent B has Friday through Sunday.
The pattern then repeats. Each parent gets a three day weekend every other week, and the longest either parent goes without seeing the kids is four days.
Who it tends to fit
2-2-3 shows up most often for:
- Younger kids, who benefit from shorter gaps between seeing each parent
- Parents who live close together, since it means more handoffs than a weekly schedule
- Co-parents with flexible or aligned work schedules, since the weekday anchors (Mon-Tue, Wed-Thu) need to work consistently for both households
It tends to fit less well when parents live far apart, since the frequent handoffs turn into a lot of driving, or when a family's schedule makes fixed weekday pickups hard to guarantee every single week.
2-2-3 vs. other 50/50 patterns
2-2-3 is one of several ways to split time evenly. The other common one is week on, week off, which cuts handoffs down to once a week but means longer stretches away from each parent. Neither is objectively better, it's a real tradeoff between handoff frequency and continuity, and it's worth revisiting as kids get older.
Try it on a real calendar
Reading a description of a rotation is one thing, seeing it land on actual dates is another. The custody schedule generator below lays out 2-2-3 (or any other pattern) on a real calendar starting from whatever date you pick, and shows you the exact handoff dates coming up.
